Branding Change

One of the hardest parts about being an independent author isn’t the writing. In fact, I’d say the writing is the easiest. I’ve been blessed with a pretty active plot brain and enough plot bunnies to keep me busy for several more years even if I never had another story idea. But marketing…that’s hard.

I think my books are decent. I’d even go so far as to say that I think they’re good. They’re well edited, the plots have been vetted, and I know how to use you’re and your properly in sentences. Seriously, you’d be amazed how often I read a book that doesn’t get this. But despite this, and some very good reviews, my sales numbers are…less than I’d like. Honestly, they’d probably be less than I’d like even if they were ten times what they are, but that’s just my over-achiever genes showing through.

Okay, getting off topic here, let’s get back to the story. Branding. Branding is important. I’m Patricia D. Eddy. My twitter handle is patricia_eddy. But last weekend, I made six tweets about running and only one about writing. Today I had to take my cat to the vet (in an emergency situation) and desperately needed to tweet something about cat poop.

There’s nothing wrong with that. I use Twitter as both a marketing tool and a personal social network. But I shouldn’t be doing both of them on the same account. More than a dozen times in the past few weeks, I’ve censored myself because I didn’t want to say something that could be misconstrued. (I swear a lot and I can also be pretty irreverent some times. While that’s who I am and I won’t apologize for it, it’s not always the best plan when you’re trying to sell books.)

So today, I created a personal twitter account. By the first of the year, @patricia_eddy is just going to be my author account. If you’d like to follow me on my personal account, go for it. You’ll find it mentioned on my author account every day or two. But be warned, there’s a lot of talking about cats and running. And a fair amount of swearing. And once in a great while, there’s talk about cat poop.
