In a reading slump…

In a reading slump…

For the past couple of months, I’ve been in a severe reading slump. As of right now, I have five books on my Kindle right now that I started and simply can’t bring myself to finish.

So what’s an author to do? Reading is one of the best hobbies for an author. Reading exposes us to new ideas, new phrasing. Reading challenges us to think outside our own, comfortable little box and see the world through someone else’s eyes–a vital skill for us to hone.

But there are weeks (months in my case) where nothing speaks to me. Of the five half-finished books, here’s the breakdown.

  • Two books simply haven’t held my interest. They’re not terrible books. I don’t want to throw the Kindle out the window or anything. But either the action’s slowed to a halt or the main characters are falling flat. I need to go back and try to read a little more of both to see if I’m merely in a bad two or three chapters or if the books are lost causes.
  • One book is really pushing some of my buttons in a good way. But since it’s an erotic romance, and most of my reading time is…well…on a public bus…I am saving that book for home reading. And I just haven’t had much free time at home to finish. I need to take a day off of work and just get through the thing. Possibly with my vibrator handy.
  • And two others…I may never finish. One doesn’t appeal to me at all. The description did, and the reviews looked good, but I simply can’t handle an erotic romance that uses terms like vajayjay and nubbins. This is total personal preference and I admit it, but the book isn’t working for me. I’ll probably give up on that one and delete it from my Kindle right after I finish this post. And the last…started out wonderfully. Erotic and exciting, the author shifted gears in the second half of the book and it’s now a rather staid and boring mystery. I’m…confused. I want my erotic suspense back. We’ll see if I go back to that one.

What about you? Have you ever given up on a book? And why? Keep your comments general, please. No author or book bashing.

And finally…give me your top recommendations for books to pique my interest. Erotic romances, thrillers, dark suspense…leave ’em in the comments!

    …..nubbins?

Yep. I an only imagine that the author watched too much Friends in the 90s.

Only once did I fail to finish a book, it was simply too hard to follow. A character would ask a question, then after three pages of description concerning their surroundings, the other would answer. I had to go back and re-read the question to understand it.

Other books have fizzled one way or another but I’ve finished them just because I hate not to finish one. They went on my ‘Never Again’ list which, thankfully, is rather short.
